Your Original Character

Hey guys! I'm back! :D

How do I show my OC off if I just can't draw?

Oh hello there frequently asked question!
Basically, if you are in this minor situation, you can ask others!
There are many people who are able to draw such things (Mostly at the cost of a commission)
Maybe a friend will be willing to give it a try
But, don't put yourself down on that

Is it okay to cosplay an OC?

Of course it is, it's just a costume afterall.

Is shipping your OC with a canon character a bad thing.

 yes

OC Help!

So here I am talking about OC flaws, but how in the world am I supposed to make one of my own?

Huzzah, a common question. Which can be easily answered! Let's go through the steps of making an OC, you don't have to follow these steps. They're more like guidelines

Step One: Making your OC

A. What kind of character?

~A good place to start would probably what you want your OC based off. A fandom maybe? Or do you want a completely original OC. The choice is yours!

B. Your OC look

~While making your OC you should go to the basics. Such as ethnicity, eye color, general height. Body type, hair length, hair texture. All the nitty gritty details

C. Naming

~I honestly already have a post about this section

D. Clean Up

~OC's are hard to make, especially the first one you do. So it's never a bad idea to get yours checked up by someone else. Online or off, it's better to be safe than sorry :)

Step Two: Introducing that OC

An OC can be introduced in many ways, fanfics...original stories....and roleplaying (there are probably many more)
There are many fabulous websites to go on to which will be there to let you publish your work:

  • Fanfiction.net: This is primarily if your story is a fanfiction if it isn't Fiction.net works as well
  • Wattpad: Not a favourite, due to the majority of the public to be 13-14 with One Direction fics. But it is a very popular site, so your story will most likely be noticed
  • Quotev: Another really cool writing site. It's pretty nice, and alot of excellent works are posted here
  • Storybird: Another excellent website, the only downside is awaiting moderation. But asides from that, nice!

These are only a couple of the sites I know, so there are more and more

Step Two (.5): Finalizing

That's it for an OC, or at least what I do. If you're confused or lost in this process, you are welcome to follow.

~Goodbye!

The Science of Names

Once again, a common mistake that is overlooked.

So, one of the most important things to have in your OC has to be its name. Without it, it would just be 'Untitled Original Character (2)'

We don't want that right?

With making a name for your OC, comes great responsibility!

Don't over do it! You might end up making some weird name like 'Periwinkle Tripletwo Amazinglon' for your OC. Is that believable?

Probs not.

So when thinking of a name, be sure to question yourself a bunch to be sure the name is a perfect fit

~Sorry for the short post~

Common Mistakes!

The Most Common Made Mistakes In Making An Original Character

When making an OC, people are aware of the becoming of a Mary-Sue. They make these mistakes without realizing it!

*this doesn't apply to all people

~*Background*~

While having a perfect life isn't one your OC should have, (nothing unrealistic of course). A terrible life isn't one either. What are the chances of all these terrible things happening to your character? Very few. Don't overuse the melodramatic backstory that most people use in order to be... "original"

~*Flaws*~

Same with the background. While being perfect isn't something you wish to have, being terrible isn't either. Don't judge your OC by how little it's flaws are. One or two are enough, don't make him/her terrible at everything.

~*Looks*~
(Neck and up)

Be realistic my darlings, if she/he dyed her hair rainbow, be honest. Is your character going to really do it? Is he/she the type? Be sure to ask these questions before you do so. Also, along with hair color. Refrain from using the cliche style "emo-hair". If your OC does have this...cut, describe it for Pete's sake, not every 'emo' has the same hair.

~*Looks*~
(Feet and up)

To keep the haters away, don't make your OC extremely skinny or extremely fat. Neither of those are imperfect, so don't make it seem that way. As I have seen characters where they made fun of those general body types (she starved herself; she cut everyday; etc...) It's okay to experiment, but not everyone is completely depressed due to the fact they aren't what society says is beautiful.

~*Sociability*~

Don't make your OC go overboard in any direction. Period.
